Royal Standard above the Palace...

Standard above Buckingham Palace

The Royal Standard flying above Buckingham Palace.

Traditionally the only flag to fly over Buckingham Palace is the Royal Standard, and it only flys when the monarch is in residence.

Even when the monarch dies, it continues to fly, as there is always a monarch. "the king is dead, long live the king!"

No flag other than the Royal Standard has EVER flown about Buckingham Palace, yet HRH the Queen announced through her press secretary that the Union Flag (sometimes erroneously called the Union Jack) would fly at Half Mast during the Funeral Service, and continue to fly there until midnight.

This is something that has never been done before, and will never be done again. Another reason why Diana's Funeral was described by the Palace as a 'unique funeral for a unique person'.
